How to Read a Skincare Ingredient List

Every skincare product sold in the US, EU, Korea, and Japan is required to list its ingredients in INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) order — from highest concentration to lowest. The first 5-6 ingredients usually make up 80% or more of the formula.

What Our Checker Looks For

  • Allergens & sensitizers — flagged fragrances, preservatives like MI/MCI, and known contact allergens
  • Comedogenic ingredients — ingredients rated 3-5 on the comedogenic scale that may clog pores
  • Irritants — high-concentration actives, drying alcohols, and harsh surfactants
  • Regulatory warnings — ingredients restricted or banned in the EU, Korea, or Japan
  • Interactions — risky combinations like AHA/BHA + retinol, or niacinamide + direct acids at low pH
