Part of our PDRN guide

The question usually goes something like this: I'm in my late thirties or forties, I've used basic moisturisers for years, I'm starting to see fine lines, and everyone's talking about PDRN. Which one actually has proven results?

It's a good question, and the honest answer is less exciting than the marketing and more useful. PDRN is a reasonable thing to add. It shouldn't be the first thing you add, and the best PDRN products for ageing skin are the ones that don't rely on PDRN alone.

The Short Answer

  • Daily sunscreen and a retinoid come first. Both have far stronger evidence for slowing and softening visible ageing than topical PDRN does.
  • PDRN's evidence for ageing skin is early. The best trials of topical PDRN we found were two small, short eye-cream studies from one research group — though, usefully, the main one was run in women aged 35 to 55.
  • So choose a PDRN product that also does the proven work. A formula that pairs PDRN with retinol, or with peptides and niacinamide, earns its place in your routine even if the PDRN turns out to be modest.
  • Our label-based picks: REJURAN Retinol + c-PDRN Serum if you want PDRN and retinol in one step, Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum if you'd rather avoid retinol, and ANUA PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 Cream if dryness is your bigger problem.

These picks are based on each product's official ingredient list, not on long-term testing by us for this guide. For fuller write-ups, see our PDRN comparison.

What PDRN can realistically do for ageing skin

PDRN is purified DNA, usually from salmon. Its reputation comes from medicine and from clinic injections, where it's delivered below the skin surface. We explain the background in What Is PDRN?.

For a serum or cream, the key question is whether it gets far enough into skin to matter. PDRN molecules are very large, and that's a genuine obstacle.

The most relevant human evidence we found is a 2026 study in PLOS One. It's worth reading closely, because the participants are close in age to the people asking this question — with a few differences worth knowing:

  • 31 Chinese women aged 35 to 55, average age 47.5, all with self-reported sensitive skin.
  • Each used a 0.1% PDRN eye cream around one eye and a 0.1% retinol eye cream around the other, for four weeks, with daily sunscreen required throughout.
  • The researchers reported roughly twice the improvement in wrinkles on the PDRN side.

An earlier paper from the same group reports a placebo-controlled eye-cream trial in 33 women, though we couldn't access it to check the details.

That's encouraging. It's also small, short, and from one research group, and neither trial tested a product you'll find on a shelf. It shows topical PDRN can help in the right formula. It doesn't show that the PDRN serum in your basket will.

The two things with much stronger evidence

If you're building a routine for mature skin, these come before PDRN.

1. Sunscreen, every day

In a randomised trial in Nambour, Australia, published in Annals of Internal Medicine in 2013, 903 adults under 55 were split between daily sunscreen and using it whenever they felt like it. After four and a half years, skin ageing in the daily group was 24% less, and the researchers found no detectable increase in skin ageing in that group over the study.

Nothing else in this article has evidence that long or that large behind it. If you do one thing, do this.

2. A retinoid

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives, and they're among the most researched topical ingredients for visible ageing. A review in Clinical Interventions in Aging describes improvements in fine and coarse wrinkles with prescription tretinoin, and a significant improvement in fine wrinkles after 12 weeks with a retinol formulation.

The same review is clear about the trade-off: redness, peeling, burning and itching are common side effects. It also notes they're more common with tretinoin and tazarotene than with retinol or retinaldehyde. Start slowly.

What to look for in a PDRN product for mature skin

Once sunscreen and a retinoid are in the picture, a PDRN product earns its place by doing some of that work too. Three things to check:

  1. Proven ingredients alongside the PDRN. Retinol, peptides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are all common partners. They make the product worthwhile regardless of how much the PDRN contributes.
  2. The DNA ingredient reasonably high on the list, or a stated percentage. On labels, PDRN appears as Sodium DNA or Hydrolyzed DNA. Some products list it near the end; a few list no DNA at all. We checked six in salmon DNA vs vegan PDRN.
  3. A texture that suits your skin. Mature skin is often drier, which is where a cream can do more than a light serum.

The formulas that fit best

All positions below come from each brand's official ingredient list, checked on 17 September 2026.

Product Why it suits mature skin PDRN on the label Watch out for
REJURAN Advanced Retinol + c-PDRN Serum Retinol and PDRN in one product, plus a peptide Hydrolyzed DNA, 16th of 25; retinol 18th Contains retinol — introduce slowly. The brand's page doesn't state the PDRN source.
Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum Five peptides and niacinamide, no retinol Salmon version: Sodium DNA 8th of 40. Sold in salmon and rose (vegan) versions with different formulas — check which one you're buying. Contains fragrance.
ANUA PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 Cream A moisturiser for drier skin, with niacinamide and ten forms of hyaluronic acid Salmon-derived, per the brand; Sodium DNA 10th of 48 No retinoid, so pair it with one.
Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Eye Cream For lines around the eyes — the area the PDRN study looked at Salmon-derived, per the brand; Sodium DNA 22nd of 52; retinol 38th Contains retinol. Don't layer another retinoid in the same area.

A Medicube Pink Peptide Serum bottle we photographed in a Korean store (top of this page) states "PDRN (Sodium DNA) 1%" on the label. The bottle didn't say whether it was the salmon or rose version.

The eye cream, and one with four retinoid ingredients, are covered in more detail in our PDRN toner pads and eye creams guide.

About "clinically proven" claims

You'll see percentages on PDRN product pages. ANUA's page for its cream, for example, says it was "clinically tested to support collagen improvement by up to 68.3%."

Treat numbers like that as manufacturer data. The product page doesn't link to a published study, so there's no way to see how many people took part, how it was measured, or what it was compared against. That isn't a reason to distrust the product, just a reason not to choose between products based on those figures.

To answer the question at the top directly: we didn't find published clinical trials for any of the products on this page. The strongest evidence you can buy for ageing skin is still sunscreen and a retinoid.

A simple routine that makes sense

This isn't medical advice, and if you have a skin condition, a dermatologist can tailor it. But a sensible starting point looks like this:

Morning

  1. Gentle cleanse
  2. PDRN serum (the Medicube peptide serum is a good fit here, as it has no retinol)
  3. Moisturiser — the ANUA cream if you're dry
  4. Sunscreen, every day

Evening

  1. Cleanse
  2. A retinoid, two or three nights a week to start — or the REJURAN serum, which gives you retinol and PDRN together
  3. Moisturiser

Introduce one new product at a time, a couple of weeks apart, so you can tell what's helping and what's irritating.

FAQ

Is PDRN good for mature skin? It can be a useful addition. The main topical PDRN trial we found was run in women aged 35 to 55 and reported wrinkle improvements around the eyes over four weeks. It isn't a substitute for sunscreen and a retinoid, which have much stronger evidence.

Is PDRN better than retinol? Not on current evidence. One small four-week study reported a PDRN eye cream outperforming a retinol eye cream, in 31 women with sensitive skin. Retinoids have decades of research behind them. The PDRN study reported good tolerability, but it was too small and short to settle how the two compare.

Can I use PDRN and retinol together? Some products already combine them — the REJURAN serum contains both. Whatever you use, introduce retinoids gradually, because irritation is their most common side effect.

Which PDRN brand has the strongest clinically proven results? We didn't find published clinical trials for the PDRN products we checked. Brand-published percentages are manufacturer data. Choose on the full ingredient list instead.

Should I use a PDRN serum or cream for ageing skin? If your skin is dry, a cream like ANUA's does double duty as your moisturiser. If you already have a moisturiser you like, a serum is easier to add.
